Gold Panning outing to Coker Creek
«
on:
June 28, 2011, 06:37:05 AM »
Okay members. I have started a outing to the Coker Creek area for a gold panning session. It will be for Saturday - July 16th and we are invited to attend a meeting of the Coker Creek GPAA held at 10:00 am by Chuck Pharis (President). After the meeting they hold a raffle for gold hunting items and tickets are only $1.00 each. Afterwards Mr. Pharis will take our group to either the clubs gold area or a public area near that. Mr. Pharis has offered to show our group the basics of gold panning. He has over 40 years of gold prospecting experience and is eager to share his knowledge. If you wish to attend it will be $10.00 per person and this will include a hot dog and chips lunch with ice cold drinks....(I will be the cook!)....I also will provide gatorade if it looks to be very hot. If enough participate, I hope to have a couple of nice gold prospecting gifts to give out at the end of the day. So if you are interested please let me know and we will discuss it further at our meeting. Hope to have a nice group signed up. If this is successful, I will be motivated to create more outings and get-togethers.
Thanks
Harold

I'm in for the session and meeting. Yeah I found my boots when the water heater busted so now I have a reason to use them. Last time I went I spent the day barefoot in the water dredging. Liked to have froze my piggies off. I think I have 2 or 3 pans here. folks don't forget to bring a 5 gallon bucket along with you. It can serve two purposes. Either sit on it or fill it up with sand to pan out or bring 2 and do both. Hey Harold can we bring our water machines with us?

From past experience (2 trips) you need to plan on bringing:
Gold pan if you have one
a couple of 5 gallon buckets
a pair of gloves I suggest the ones with the latex bonded on them, it is much easier to grip slippery rocks with them, available at Northern Hyd. on Clinton Hwy. Usually a dollar a pair I think
a shovel small camp size works best
swimming trunks unless u don't mind sitting around in wet street clothes
a towel or two
plastic bags to put wet clothes into
pair of rubber boots, waders or something similar
a strong back or back brace
sunscreen
bug repellent
toilet paper I doubt there will be any facilities
folding camp chair perhaps for your comfort when eating.
money for the meeting raffle, goodies at the gold store and to pay Harold
Positive attitude
Please add to this thread by clicking on modify as you think of other items

Right now the folks going are Harold, Gabe, Stephen, Steve, Don Davis, and me. there is the possibility that Ashley and Kayla will go also. Other than them I don't know if anybody else is interested. I collected the money at the meeting and will give to you on Saturday. I will continue to add to the list as folks call me.

Thanks to Beatngu for finding the address of the Central Park. It is located at 1703 West Broadway Ave. Maryville TN. Coming from Knoxville, after you pass Foothills Mall go around the curve to the first traffic light. The Central Park will be on your right about 150 feet from the light.

Mr. Pharis said we should get there at 9:45 am and the meeting starts at 10:00 sharp. Bring some money for their raffle for gold prospecting goodies. He also said they were giving away a FREE one year membership to their club! Could be a lucky SMARTS member! Don't be camera shy because I will be bringing my camera to record this fun event.
Need to get an idea who is riding with who and please guys and gals, don't be afraid to offer the driver a few dollars for gas......we all know how expensive it is.
Ralph....I will give you a call tonight to touch base with you and fine tune some ideas. Gabe.....I will be calling you also, probably around 7:00 pm. Anyone else want to go? Please let me know so we can plan it. Need to know by TONIGHT....come on guys and gals.....it will be fun!

Boy......I think the Gold Panning Outting was a great success! A very informative meeting with the Coker Creek Prospectors Club, Mr. Chuck Pharis was a knowledgeble speaker and kept the meeting moving with great questions and information. Afterwards he setup and gave a large audience instructions on panning and of course we were very attentive as we were preparing for our day of panning on Coker Creek at Doc Rogers field. After a gladiator size encounter with a small "disposable" grill...........I think I won......?? We had hotdogs, chips and cold drinks for a late.......and I do mean late.......lunch. At the creek there was some success as color was discovered and recovered........how much is a secret for tax reasons.
Here are some photos, great fun and great friends.......can't be beat!!!!!
Congratulations to Ralph and Don who won White's gold panning kits in the door prize drawing!!
Man.......the legs in the last picture haven't seen sun in decades!!!!!
