looks like a lamp base... a good electrolosis cleaning would help it in identifing though.....

While you're doing that, Mike, I'm beginning to think it may be a bed post knob.

Also, what material is it made of ?? metal(brass), wood, ceramic??

Don't think it's a bed post.  Flat on bottom.  Threads are external.  Man would be upside down if it screwed into a bed frame.  Thanks for looking.

I think it is the center piece to an old lamp. The bottom more than likely rested on another larger piece of metal that had wide fluted legs for stability. I have seen the design with the man somewhere before I just cannot remember it right now.
