Here is the latest on the metal detecting permits issued by TVA.

The newly appointed Board of Directors for TVA have requested that the TVA police stop issuing new permits temporarily while they review TVA's land use policy for recreational purposes etc. At the current time there is no plans on changing the permit but the status of the permits will be in limbo until the reviews have been completed. There is no time table for this review so any guess as to the length of time permits will not be issued is a pure guess. There was no mention of existing permits or the renewal of them. It appears that the TVA police view the renewal of the permit as the same as a request for a new one.

Please read the TVA rules and obey them if you have a current permit. Do not give the Board of Directors any reason to stop issuing the permits as this is a good source of treasure for us to recover. In fact it might be a good idea if our club spearheaded a letter/email writing campaign to the board members requesting them to review this section of policy and request they reinstate the issuance of the permits.

Most importantly remember if you do write to them that they are your friends not your enemies. Treat them with respect, do not use profanity, threats, harassment, verbal threats, or threats of boycotts or demonstrations. Point out how we as metal detectorists have helped clean the lakes, campground areas, picnic areas, boat launching areas, and swimming areas of broken glass, metal objects, cans, rusty metal, fishing lures, hooks, and environmentally hazardous lead from sinkers and batteries. Plus the countless hours we have donated hunting items for people who lost them while enjoying the beautiful Tennessee Valley lakes and other areas.
