This may sound goofy, but I've just wanted someone to explain what the deal with marbles is. I have found beautiful glass marbles several locations in the Southeast while fishing and walking in woods and also found them in the highest altitudes of the Southwestern mountain ranges in the most remote of places. The weird thing is the marbles don't appear that old and I thought it was the pre-1950's kids that played with them anyway. Is there some other use for marbles I don't know of? Is there some secret group that plants them in remote places?

Most of the people I have metal detected with and myself included find marbles while detecting. We hunted this apartment complex that was being torn down and found lots of marbles. Of course the metal detector cannot detect marbles and we see them on top of the ground. We have also dug for a coin and there would be a marble come out of the hole also. I have probably found about 50 this way.

I can understand finding them at the last place I did under a shade tree on hard packed clay by the creek as that was probably a nice place for kids to play marbles back in the day. What I can't figure out is finding two marbles in tall grass in a sloping aspen grove at 8,000 elevation as you can't play marbles in the grass.  I don't find any other toy in the amounts that I do marbles so its just funny.
