Hey folks. I just wanted to post what I feel was my dig of the year. It took us a long time to figure this one out from metal composition test from UNCA to hard work from the Guys at American Digger Magazine, William Leigh,  and my friend Daryl Adams (Doc)
It is a Civil War 12th regiment corps Badge. It started it life out as a regular button cut for the proud soldier to show his pride. The corp badges were cut from coins as well. This button is the first known to have been dug. We are so happy to have found such a historical piece.
The Badge can be seen in next months issue of American Digger Magazine
Thanks folks!

I don't think they discriminated on the coins but, the one (1) I saw was a silver half dollar

Here it is

The Twelfth Army Corps of the Army of the Potomac was directed to wear a star as a corps badge by order of Major General Hooker issued on March 21, 1863. On September 23, 1863, the Eleventh and Twelfth corps were ordered detached from the Army of the Potomac and sent to Tennessee as reinforcements for Rosecrans' Army of the Cumberland. On April 3, 1864, the Eleventh and Twelfth Army Corps were consolidated into a new corps designated the Twentieth and the star badge formerly of the Twelfth Army Corps adopted for the new corps. In part this was done because of the blemished record of the Eleventh Corps. The Fourth Division of the corps was detached to continue service in the District of Tennessee and did not operate with the bulk of the corps in Georgia and the Carolinas. The Badges were hand cut from buttons to silver coins and rarely ever seen.

well I would have cut in two for y'all        Roll Eyes

here's   more on corps Badges.   Did you know?  The 12th corps had never lost a color or a gun? And when they switched over to 20th Corps they kept the star Badge and kept the no loss reputation.

Thanks Randy. The absolute hardest part was trying to figure out what it could have been. After I got a confirmation the research was easy....And very informative
