Founds in civil war site, and was deep enough to be from the period, its about 2 inches long

This just got identified on Tnet. It is a 1906 pencil sharpener. They have a picture on there that is exactly what you found.

And thats the beauty of having a bunch of folks from all over as members of our forum. When several folks get together and collaborate it is much easier to find answers, identify items, come up with places to hunt, and share in the excitement of the find.

 Can't take all the credit

I asked some one else for the ID.

Funny though, I have a couple like it that date to the early 1800's and it never occurred to me what it might be.
