It pretty corroded on the back, I will try and clean it up some more and check

I didn't find it in my books. It may be post war. I will keep looking.

Guy - I checked some of my grandfathers WW1 buttons and yours is older than that I am pretty sure. I am guessing yours is either late civil war or later. I really thought it might have been confederate by your description and where you found it but after seeing it I don't think it is. I tried googling and checking my books but I have not had any luck yet. If you can get the back cleaned up that will really help. Military buttons were only made by a few manufactures and should be marked on the back. That also can date it. I will keep looking until we get that thing identified.

Even though that button is corroded I might be able to tel you weather or not its a civilian or military.

Nice find! not sure what the button is from tho. maybe a button off a jacket pre civil war.
