Once upon a time, a fellow was hunting for a civil war campsite and came upon a place by the side of the road that was so loaded with mason jar lids (and a few pieces of other modern trash sprinkled in) that he could hardly separate the signals.  What would you have done?

Well Relicus since this same type of thing happened to me 4 weeks ago while out hunting with Boaz and Mr. V I did the only thing I could. I just started digging and digging until there were no more mason lids coming up. You might be interested to know I pulled 7 or 8 out of the hole along with all kinds of broken glass and other pieces of trash. I did finally find a penny in the mess and it was a memorial at that. So my pile of junk was just that a pile of junk. Now as for what would I have done had I been you, I would have pulled out my cell phone and called Ralph and said get over here and bring some shovels, a couple of screens, water, gloves and tylenol. But please tell us what you did because you didn't call me..

It was probably a privy hole that had been filled in with junk.
