I live in Bryson City, NC and have been periodically detecting for the past 5-6 years. I recently sold my Quattro and purchased a Minelab Safari. Most of my metal detecting experience has been somewhat lackluster, mostly due to the area I live in, however I have made some interesting finds around here (Civil War eagle button). My better finds have come from areas in Kentucky and Cincinnati at old house sites. Recently, I have become extremely fascinated with the Civil War and have been spending numerous hours researching Civil War campsites. I have information on many camps in East Tennessee and am interested in networking with some folks over that way that are interested in relic hunting as well. Honestly, I just like to dig up history and have no illusions that this hobby will ever make me rich. So I guess my motive in joining this forum is to find some other people to hunt with and help locate some Civil War camp sites.

Welcome. There are quite a few of us on here that enjoy relic hunting and some of us are trying to put together a small group hunt. We just need to find a location that had activity and will hold everybody.

Have any of you guys had any luck locating the camps at Blaine's Crossroads (Blaine, TN), Strawberry Plains, or Tazewell?  These locations may be old news to you, but I have been reading some excerpts from the Official Records that documents these areas as civil war camps.  I have additional info on some of the regiments that stayed at these locations as well.  I'm definitely willing to burn a day to come over the mountain and help locate these sites if they haven't already been found.  In theory, I know the obvious signs to look for, but lack the experience of actually finding the camps as I have been skunked on two locations I searched in Kentucky.  I guess what I'm saying is that my information may be completely useless to you guys, but I sure would like to tag along on some Civil War sites.  I do make beer, so I guess that's something that I can offer.

Yes, I'm about 60 miles west of Asheville.  Gotta tell you, I love Papa's and Beer and 12 Bones.  Excellent eats.

Ya know, there had to be several camps around Bryson City somewhere.  They came through the Smokies some...I have found reference to old roads in the park used during the Civil War.  And they had to have staged somewhere before coming through that!
