Have any of you guys had any luck locating the camps at Blaine's Crossroads (Blaine, TN), Strawberry Plains, or Tazewell?  These locations may be old news to you, but I have been reading some excerpts from the Official Records that documents these areas as civil war camps.  I have additional info on some of the regiments that stayed at these locations as well.  I'm definitely willing to burn a day to come over the mountain and help locate these sites if they haven't already been found.  In theory, I know the obvious signs to look for, but lack the experience of actually finding the camps as I have been skunked on two locations I searched in Kentucky.  I guess what I'm saying is that my information may be completely useless to you guys, but I sure would like to tag along on some Civil War sites.  I do make beer, so I guess that's something that I can offer.

Lots has been found in those areas over the years.  It's still possible to find stuff there.  You never know until you try.

Most likely private land.  There was quite a bit of troop movement in those areas. If you're interested in researching, check out the following website:

If you decide to go for a ride and look at the areas, let me know what you find.

I don't know about the Blaine or Tazewell sites but I know that the Strawberry Plains area has been hunted tremendously. All the land there is private property and you have to have permission to go hunting. I would suspect that both of the other areas have been hunted or are being hunted regularly. There are a lot of folks who do not belong to this forum or our club who hunt all the time with and without permission. They go in leave gates open, dig holes and not fill them in, and dig peoples stuff up. That is why so many potential good sites exist that we will never be able to obtain permission to hunt.

well, lots of good conversation and friendly chat...along with a sharing of finds and history is what we need to do.  Anyone in the club good at that type of communication?  seems like a team effort to me!  we will all benefit in the end!

Not about who gets what...just about finding and sharing in my opinion.

Oh, and maybe a fresh muffin and coffee...lol

Casey,
Your last post about troop movement through the Smokies sparked my interest, so I started doing some more research.  Man, did I find some great accounts of the 14th Illinois Calvary trekking through the Smokies in order to sneak up on the Thomas Legion.  I actually managed to get in touch with a gentleman who had a forefather that was actually in the 14th Illinois Calvary that made this journey.  Anyway, he helped me track down a book written in 1898 that provides a detailed account of the skirmish at Deep Creek.  Let me know if your interested and I’ll send you the link.

I am absolutely interested!  I never would have thought anything about looking there, but I was reading through a hiking book, "Hiking in the Great Smokies" by Carson Brewer and he referenced it.  Seems like a awful hard way to go, but they did!

Well, I've got several possible locations marked on a map and have some legitimate evidence (personal accounts by soldiers) that goes into detail on the skirmishes and camps located east of Knoxville.  I don't mind sharing information and resources, but I do want to make sure I get to hunt these areas if possible.  If anyone is interested, let me know and perhaps we can collaborate on this.
