...of negroes collecting Federal bodies for reburial in the nearby National Cemetery...there is a monument there marking the resting place of over 7000 unknown Yankees...when U.S. Grant wrote his memoirs, he stated "The only battle that I wish I had never fought was Cold Harbor."  Over 10,000 US casualties in less than 20 minutes...the confederate fire was so murderous that some officers refused orders to attack the CS lines...one Colonel was said to remark "I would not order my men into that fire if Jesus Christ himself gave the order!"  See "Misc CW Artifacts for some personal relics I pulled from this battlefield. Trivia:  the original name of this area was "Cool Arbor"...a rest stop on a well-travelled road...it was named after the shady grove of trees there...over the years, the name was inadvertently changed to Cold Harbor...

Just shows a small portion of the "horror" of that war. I too like finding relics and artifacts from that period of our history........but pics like this get me to contemplating the sadness and loss.
