Hello. My name is Jeremy Gates and I just had the chance to post finally. Joined the forum a week or so ago a being a truck driver was hard to post.
Anyways I made the mistake of just buying a metal detector off eBay for about 100.00 and could have bought a better one had I did more research for a little more cash.
But I hope to find enough stuff with it to buy a better one  Wink. I live in Kingston Tn and am wondering whats the best way to ask for permission to detect. I would like to come to a meeting and become a member if I can get by on a day off. Not very good at typing so I will leave this introduction at this but if anyone has a question I will post back.

Welcome to the forums Mudmaster. Our next meeting is the 14th and all of us hope you can attend. The hardest part of asking permission is getting up the courage to just walk up or call the owner and ask. Just ask politely, explain what you would like to do, tell them you will be real careful with their property, and you will show them what you find. After you hunt make sure you have cleaned up and then show them what you found. Also show them the trash items you removed from their yard. Sometimes the owner will ask for a particular item. It is tough to give up a standing liberty quarter but when you do it is sure to pay dividends in the future. This person tells another and another and before long you have a dozen yards to hunt and you get to keep all your finds. If you get turned down then smile and thank them. I have found that having a business card to leave with them is a good way for getting your name out in a neighborhood.

Thanks for the info. And now i don't feel so stupid about my business card idea Wink  Right now I am doing some research and getting the nerve to ask at a few locations. Kingston seems to have a few historical locations that I can get permission to dig near.
